United Nations announces IDPwD theme

The United Nations (UN) has announced Sustainable Development: The Promise of Technology as the 2014 theme for International Day of People with Disability.

Rapidly developing technology has changed the way people with disability can access entertainment, work, communication and basic information seeking.

The theme focuses on the role of technology as a way to break down barriers for people with disability and how devices are becoming faster, cheaper and more accessible.

The UN theme highlights the role of technology in:

  • disaster risk reduction and emergency responses — technology (especially social media) is changing the way we respond to crises and it is important to involve people with disability in planning and response.
  • creating enabling working environments — technology is an important enabler and assistive supports can be the difference between can and cannot.
  • disability inclusive sustainable development goals — for more information on the UN sustainable development goals, see the sustainable development knowledge platform.

There are a range of measures that Australia has committed to for the purposes of improving accessibility for people with disability, including ratifying the Marrakesh Treaty, the continued roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and government websites working towards the WCAG 2.0 standards for web accessibility.
