A message from the Parliamentary Secretary
Welcome to the Australian Government's International Day of People with Disability website. As the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children's Services, I am privileged to be involved in promoting such an important day.
The Australian Government is committed to ensuring people with disability, their families and carers are recognised and encouraged to participate in the community.
This website has been created to help you understand and celebrate International Day of People with Disability, and I hope you find the information and resources interesting and useful.
Hundreds of events were held across Australia to promote disability issues awareness and to celebrate the talents and achievements of people with disability on International Day of People with Disability 2007.
In 2008, I urge you to take part in International Day of People with Disability as we mark the contributions people with disability make to the Australian community.
Finally, I would like to thank all those who were involved in the inaugural 2007 National Disability Awards celebrations. There was an overwhelming response, and I encourage you to get involved in activities in your local communities to support International Day of People with Disability in 2008.
BILL SHORTEN
