IDPwD Disability Community Leaders – Michael Taggart
Michael is a disability advocate and leader and a driving force for disability accessibility in local government. He was instrumental in the integration of assistive technology at the Salisbury City Council, leading the development of the City of Salisbury (SA) first Disability Action Plan 1999-2003. Salisbury City Council was one of the first South Australian councils to lodge their plan on the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission website, leading the way for other councils.
Michael was the leader behind the development of a local government disability awareness training package across the five largest city councils in South Australia. The training package was deemed the first of its kind to address local government responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. Michael’s achievements were recognised at the 2009 National Disability Awards when he was nominated for and received the Local Government Award.
